Washington University Investment Management Company strives to be a leader in investment management.  We seek to be creative and innovative in generating the highest returns on a risk adjusted basis.  We invest with a long term time horizon but maintain flexibility to take advantage of dynamic market movements to generate high returns.  We use a multi-asset strategy that emphasizes equity and equity-like investments in order to generate long term capital appreciation.  Because we recognize that great investments are available in all corners of the world, our opportunity set spans the globe and we invest in both developed and emerging markets across all asset classes.  We favor active investment strategies that have the potential to outperform standard benchmarks and help us achieve our long term goals.

The WUIMC team spends significant time seeking out both experienced and up and coming managers that have the ability to assist us in achieving our objectives. We seek to be longstanding partners with these managers and work to facilitate knowledge sharing.  In order to identify these managers, our due diligence efforts focus on qualitative and quantitative research of the fundamental opportunity at the asset class level and the individual manager level. We don’t focus on filling up allocations or bucketing managers.  Instead our team is divided into three general areas of focus and we then work collaboratively to share ideas and seek out the best opportunities being presented by the markets.

Three Areas of Focus

• The Public Markets team focuses their efforts on researching the marketable asset classes which include equities, fixed income, and real assets on a global basis.  About half of the portfolio is exposed to these types of assets. The strategy of this portfolio reflects the overall focus on long term equity returns, active management and fundamental research capabilities.  WUIMC’s Public Markets team consists of two investment professionals with extensive experience across the marketable investment universe.
• The Hedged Strategies team focuses their efforts on generating attractive risk-adjusted returns. WUIMC has been active in this asset class for many years and our long term approch is reflected in the fact that several managers have been in the portfolio since its inception.  The Hedged Strategies team consists of two dedicated investment professionals with an average of 15 years of experience investing in hedge funds.
• The Private Markets team seeks out investment opportunities that will provide unique sources of enhanced return that are not available in the public markets. The portfolio includes investments in private equity, venture capital, private real estate and natural resources related assets.  WUIMC has invested in various private assets for over 20 years and is committed to these asset classes as a way to enhance the return of the overall portfolio.   The Private Markets team comprises three investment professionals with extensive investment experience across the private markets universe.
